Renee Mahl is a consultant, expert and legal adviser with over 30 years of experience (since 1994) in international transport, commercial and transport insurance law. His main clients are transport and logistics companies, cargo exporters, importers, intermediaries and insurance companies.
For decades, he has represented clients in disputes arising out of damage to goods or delays, both in and out of court, the main issues being:
whether the carrier is liable for the damage, whether the claim is well founded and proven, whether the risk of damage is borne by the shipper or the carrier, and what could be the role of insurance in compensating for the damage?
In addition, Renee Mahl provides expert opinions:
1) technical expertise - determining the cause of the loss and damage (e.g. whether the damage to the goods was caused by a defective fastening or a defective loading, installation or packaging);
2) legal assessment - identifying the party responsible for the loss and damage on the basis of domestic and international professional literature and relevant case law.
As a sideline, Renee Mahl organizes training sessions on the same topic 1-2x a year and, at the client's request, conducts in-house training based on the client's needs. In the period 1999 - 2015 she has published commented editions of the CMR Convention, which are based on constantly changing Estonian and international legislation and case law. A new edition will be published in 2025-2026 due to changes and updates in Estonian case law (e.g. CMR Art 29 - gross negligence of the carrier; CMR Art 34-36 – successive carriers)
